Getting the right services and materials, sustainably sourced and ensuring responsible procurement is critical to ensuring our brands with purpose grow. Context and Job Purpose:
The Carbon Measurement & Reporting Manager, within the Business Operations Sustainability Climate Team, plays a fundamental role in supporting Unilever’s global scope 3 carbon emissions reporting and delivering our goal to reach -40% Industrial & Energy and -30% Forest, Land & Agriculture emissions in our Scope 3 value chain by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2039.
A new Carbon Management Platform (Microsoft Sustainability Manager) was launched, to measure and report our annual (externally assured) GHG footprint in our annual reports, track and report progress towards our climate targets, and ensure compliance with all climate reporting regulations.
At the same time, the Supplier Climate Program (the biggest lever in driving decarbonization for UL) has established a good foundation with the engagement of TOP300 suppliers, and close to 200 delivering on the program ask to establish a CO2 baseline, set a target, and provide Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data. More than 700 supplier-specific PCFs are now integrated into our GHG footprint.
The focus of this position is to support the delivery and growth of the supplier climate program, and the engagement of our suppliers on the climate journey, through the leverage of carbon data, data management, analytics, and insights.
The role requires experience in working with data and a diverse set of stakeholders, both internal (procurement, D&A) and external suppliers, to establish and support a data-driven and insight-driven carbon and sustainability agenda.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Unilever’s Supplier Climate Program while advancing global climate data measurement, management, analytics, and insights.
Key Accountabilities:
Supplier Climate Program (SCP) - Performance tracking and supporting decarbonization programs with data:
- Tracking progress towards SCP targets (at global, country, business group, portfolio levels)
- Establish supplier scorecards and trackers per priority portfolio – in interface with MSM/MFA
- Provide data & insights, incl. forecasting, and scenario analysis, to develop and inform decarbonization programs and strategies, particularly with procurement
- Support with data and systems the development of joint decarbonization roadmaps with key suppliers within a specific material or ingredient portfolio, directing to reductions in GHG emissions aligned with UL targets:
- Inform with carbon and finance data costed decarbonization plans for priority materials, that is cognizant of R&D and Sourcing strategies, Supplier Strategies, and disruptive innovations.
- Establish and maintain a cadence for reviewing performance and progress against the plan; follow up on specific actions to ensure that the overall goals are delivered.
- Contribute to the communications plan for updating stakeholders on progress
SCP Data collection and Management:
- Support annual data collection, calculation, assurance, and internal & external reporting processes for SCP and with suppliers, in close collaboration with D&A and procurement
- Collect, organize, and manage climate-related data from various internal and external sources, linked with the Supplier Climate Program, ensuring all data are auditable and able to pass rigorous assurance requirements
- Maintain and continuously improve robust databases and systems to facilitate accurate data tracking, analysis, and reporting to support the Supplier Climate Program.
Data management innovation – forecasting capability
- Explore innovative ways to streamline data collection and improve supplier Scope 3 data quality
- Explore how to leverage AI and forecasting capabilities to accelerate the supplier’s decarbonization journey with data, insights and knowledge
- Explore how to transfer UL knowledge to suppliers in an accessible, cost-effective way
- Continuously improve Unilever’s carbon accounting methodologies and accuracy within the Supplier Climate Program
Procurement Climate Data training & system onboarding:
- Training on how carbon data can inform procurement decision-making processes
- MSM/MFA training & capacity-building for procurement Net Zero squad
- User onboarding and support
Professional Skills:
ESSENTIAL
- Deeply passionate and interested in climate change.
- In-depth understanding of carbon accounting, methodologies and tools. Familiarity with product carbon footprint (PCF), LCA, and sustainability frameworks (e.g. PACT)
- Strong cross-functional project/program management skills, especially in the delivery and management of digital data systems & solutions.
- Demonstrated strength in strategic analysis and implementation (results-oriented)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capacity to convey complex concepts in a simple way to diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and adapt to a dynamic work environment.
- Proficiency in data analysis, including quantitative analysis, statistical modelling, and data visualization.
- Familiarity with sustainability reporting standards and frameworks (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD, CSRD, CDP, SBTi)
- Attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate and reliable deliverables.
- High level of self-leadership, reliability, a starter-finisher.
- Experience with greenhouse gas inventory management and reporting software is a plus.
Experience Required:
ESSENTIAL
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, sustainability, climate studies, or a related field. Master's degree is preferred.
- 8+ years of relevant work experience in climate data analysis, sustainability reporting, or related fields.
- Extensive experience with carbon accounting and greenhouse gas emissions reporting.
- Familiarity with the FMCG industry and its sustainability challenges is advantageous.
- Experience in utilizing data analysis tools, software, and databases for reporting purposes.
